In the Americas, activists in defense of reproductive rights have often cited Roe v. Wade, the United States’ 1973 Supreme Court decision that guaranteed women’s constitutional right to abortion, as a model that inspired their strategies. This changed in June 2022, when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the 1973 landmark decision – and when activists stressed that the court decision may have a chilling effect on reproductive justice advocacy throughout the hemisphere. This study seeks to focus on activist strategies and feminist mobilization that provide alternative role models, such as those in Argentina and Chile that had significant political and legislative accomplishments. It uses the lens of specific case studies to trace the changing roadmaps for reproductive rights activists in the 2oth and 21st centuries.
